The Further Observations of Lady Whistledown
She knows ALL the ton’s most delicious secrets!
It's winter in Regency London and a number of families have decided to return to the ton for a whirlwind of social events, including a night at the theater, a skating party and a Valentine's Day ball. Luckily, Lady Whistledown is there to catch all the scandalous goings-on…
Leading the anthology, Suzanne Enoch's pleasant tale, "One True Love," tells the story of Lady Anne Bishop, who's been promised since birth to the reclusive Marquis of Halfurst. When Lady W. reports on a mild flirtation Anne has with another man, Halfurst travels to London to protect his interests, but ends up losing his heart.
Karen Hawkins delivers a standout story with "Two Hearts," featuring offbeat Liza Pritchard and her best friend, Sir Royce Pemberley. Although Royce has thought of Liza as a confidante for 20 years, he sees another side to this strong woman when she intends to settle down. It's rare to see male and female friendships in any romance, and even rarer in Regencies thanks to the strict times.
Mia Ryan (a pen name for a veteran author that this reviewer suspects, in her best Whistledown imitation, to be Malia Martin) delivers "A Dozen Kisses," with a very unique hero who has trouble communicating after a serious accident. Though it's hard to believe the bland heroine would fall for him on the basis of his mixed signals and terse sentences.
Grande dame Julia Quinn ties things up with "Thirty-Six Valentines" starring the warm and mature Miss Susannah Ballington, who was very publicly jilted by one Mann-Formsby brother last season and now finds herself being courted by the other.
